FIFA 18 Global Series Playoff PlayStation4 Survival Day Recap

Posted May 30th at 4:00pm.

Today was Survival Day for the 64 competitors at the FIFA 18 Global Series PS4 Playoffs. 16 of the best PlayStation 4 FIFA 18 players will earn a spot in the 2018 FIFA eWorld Cup Grand Final this summer in London. Here are the highlights from the first day:

UNDEFEATED

On Survival Day, four is the magic number. Win four rounds out of possible seven and you earn a spot in the round of 32. Lose four rounds and you head home. Two competitors crushed the competition today with 5-0 records. NICOLAS99FC dominated every game he played today including a 9-0 trouncing of his Argentinian compatriot DIEGOG1996. Nicolas's potent attack was on display in Amsterdam and he finished the day with 32 total goals scored. Spaniard JRA LION completed fifth win of the day with a narrow 5-4 win over M4RV.

PENALTY KICKS WIN SURVIVAL DAY

One of the most dramatic moments that can happen in a football match is when penalty kicks decide the victor. And on Survival Day of the PlayStation 4 Playoff, fans were treated to one of those moments after Eisvogel's game-tying goal in the 113th minute. QLASH CRAZY FAT GAMER and the FUT Champions Cup Manchester runner-up were up to the task, making incredible save after incredible save in an epic back-and-forth shootout to decide which player would emerge from the 5th round with their third win.

EL TORNADO STORMS IN

FIFA 18's signature move, El Tornado, showed up on Survival Day in one of the final matches of the tournament. Although Melbourne City's pro Joshingwood's tournament is over - he finished the day 0-4 - the Australian left us with a beautiful execution of the FIFA 18 cover star's specialty move.

Check out this video to learn how you can do El Tornado on FIFA 18.

BIG NAMES GO DOWN

Joshingwood wasn't the only player to finish the day disappointed at an 0-4 exit. New York City FC player NYC_CHRIS saw his PlayStation 4 playoffs end much sooner than he probably expected when he failed to win a single round. Chris, who had earned his place in the FIFA 18 Global Series Playoff after a promising run to the quarterfinals at FUT Champions Cup Barcelona, has now felt the sting of disappointment twice in a row after getting knocked out in the final round of the group stage at FUT Champions Cup Manchester.

Another well-known pro who was surprisingly eliminated after only four rounds of play was VfB DrErhano. The VfB Stuttgart pro was outscored 26-10 over the four rounds and was sent home, ending his journey to the FIFA eWorld Cup Grand Final much earlier than expected.

ON THE BUBBLE

Although they get to fight for another day, there are several pros with a current 2-3 record who find themselves in peril of seeing their FIFA 18 competitive season end tomorrow. With no margin for error, this group of players cannot afford another loss on Qualification Day and their only chance to move on to the knockout stage is to win their remaining two group stage rounds.

Some big names are in this situation, including well-known fan favourite Hashtag Agge. The Danish former FIFA Interactive World Cup champion started the tournament with a win but then dropped his next 3 rounds before narrowly missing elimination in round 5 by defeating  Chinese pro YuwenC.

Mexican Pro and ESWC Brazil champion rein10 started the tournament with two straight losses before pulling his record level with two consecutive victories before falling once again in round 5. With 2 wins and 3 losses, the Monterrey native needs a win against EA Champions Cup victor Flash Amraan if he wants to remain alive in the tournament.

Tomorrow is Qualification Day. Stream begins at 12:00 PM CEST/ 6:00 AM EST/ 3:00 AM PST. The day begins with the final two rounds of the Swiss-style group stage. Then the stakes are raised with the Round of 32 where competitors will play for one of the sixteen coveted tickets to the FIFA eWorld Cup Grand Final to be played in London on August 2-4 . It's win or go home. Don't miss out!
