NHL 14 Cover Vote Finalist: Brodeur

Posted May 30th at 12:00am.

No one can deny the fact that NHL 14 Cover Vote finalist Martin Brodeur is regarded as one of the best goalies in the world.

Originally drafted 20th overall by the New Jersey Devils in 1990, Brodeur made his NHL debut with a brief stint during the 1991-92 season. He was awarded the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year after the ‘93-‘94 season thanks in large part to his .915 save percentage and 27 wins. A year later, he helped lead the Devils to their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, where they swept the Detroit Red Wings.

The Devils would go on to win two more Stanley Cups with Brodeur in net. In 2000, they defeated the Dallas Stars in six games; in 2003, they would outlast the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in a thrilling seven-game series. They reached the finals two other times, losing to the Colorado Avalanche in 2001 and falling victim to the incredible run of the Los Angeles Kings last year.

If three Stanley Cup rings weren’t enough, his career accolades include four Vezina trophies (2003, 2004, 2007, 2008) as outstanding goaltender, five William M. Jennings trophies (1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2010) for fewest goals against in a season and two Olympic Gold Medals (2002, 2010) as a member of the Canadian National team.

He also holds numerous NHL records, including most regular season wins (and losses), most regular season shutouts, most playoff shutouts and most career saves. In addition to those records, he is part of a select group of goalies to score in a game, something he has done three times, including once in the playoffs.

It’s been 17 years since a goalie was featured on the cover. The legendary Martin Brodeur would be a great player to end that drought. Head over to the NHL 14 Cover Vote Page and vote for Marty B.
