Madden NFL 19 Ratings: Top 5 Rookies QBs

Posted July 3rd at 3:00pm.

Hot take: the quarterback position is the most critical in all of football. Fair, that’s not exactly breaking new ground in terms of stance, but that doesn’t make it any less true. NFL teams spend quite a bit of time and money investing in quality players come Draft day. Ranging from first round picks like Peyton Manning to steals like Tom Brady, the next big QB doesn’t necessarily develop from high Draft stock.

Not every pick develops into a future Hall of Famer, but that doesn’t prevent the Madden 19 class from providing some exciting gameplay mechanics. With that in mind, let’s look the top 5 rookie QBs in Madden NFL 19.

1. Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns
81 OVR

We spoke a bit about Mayfield in the Top 5 Rookies article, so this shouldn’t be a surprise. Outside of his base ratings that we broke down, his 87 Throw Under Pressure rating is the highest of the rookie signal callers by a wide margin. He’s also the only rookie QB with an 80+ rating for Short, Mid, and Deep ranges. He’s one of the more versatile QBs in this bunch.

2. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

79 OVR

Lamar Jackson could be the most interesting QB to play as in Madden 19. If you sim a lot of games in Franchise, he’s likely not the best pick at the moment. But holy hell, his base ratings make him fun. The stud athlete clocks a 91 Speed, making him not only the fastest QB in the game, but the only one who breaks 90 in that category. He also sports a 93 Ball Carrier Vision, an 86 Spin, 89 Juke, and 94 Throw Power. His accuracy scores (83 Short, 80 Mid, 74 Deep) can lead to some wild throws, but his running scores can also lead to several easy first downs after escaping the pocket. Watch out for this one.

3. Josh Rosen, Arizona Cardinals

78 OVR

While the first two guys listed both fit the QB Scrambler Player Archetype, Rosen is the only one in the top five listed under Field General. If you prefer a more traditional pocket passer, Rosen is the easy pick for you here. While his QB base ratings are solid enough, Rosen’s Accuracy scores at 89 Short and 85 Mid are the best in the rookie class. If your playstyle follows the more traditional QB models over the more mobile options, then Rosen is your guy from the rookie class. Just don’t leave the pocket.

4, Sam Darnold, New York Jets

75 OVR

Darnold was earning some Andrew Luck comparisons early in the Draft/Combine scouting process. For Madden purposes, he’s a balanced QB that’s adequate at most tasks you can throw at him. His 90 Throw Power isn’t the strongest obviously, but his 86 Short and 82 Mid Accuracy scores allow for some reliability – but don’t throw it deep. His 73 Deep rating means connecting on huge passes will be rare, at best. But, his 85 Throw on the Run is second only to Mayfield’s 88.

5. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

74 OVR

Rounding out the rookie QBs is Allen. With a 74 OVR and all Accuracy ratings below 80, he’s the least forgiving QB of the group. Allen fits the Strong Arm Player Archetype perfectly though, as he sports a 99 Throw Power. That makes him the strongest passer in the game, topping last season’s champ, Matthew Stafford, who still carries a 98 Throw Power himself. Allen will require some care gameplay wise, but he has enough power to make any throw possible.
