Madden 99 Club: Tom Brady

Posted June 27th at 9:00am.

Move over, Father Time. Tom Brady is back for another season. He’s returned to the Madden NFL 99 Club and deservedly so, all while entering his age 41 NFL campaign. Sure, he showed us that he is still human after falling to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, but we’re talking video games here.

The G.O.A.T. graced the cover of Madden NFL 18 last year (he was a 99 OVR at launch) and led his New England Patriots to a 13-3 record culminating in the eighth Super Bowl berth of his career. Brady threw for over 4,500 yards and 32 touchdowns and battled a slew of nagging injuries along the way. But at age 40, Brady earned his third career NFL MVP award.

He’ll kick off the Madden NFL 19 season with a 99 OVR, just like last year. Brady owns 99 attributes in Awareness, Stamina, and Play Action and has the best Throw Accuracy in the game, also maxed out at 99.

Brady is definitely not a mobile quarterback, which is news to absolutely nobody. But the man can stand in the pocket, methodically cycle through his reads, and effortlessly deposit a perfect pass like nobody else. That all shines through in his 99 Throw Accuracy, best in the game. The king of situational football, he doesn’t get phased when the pass-rush is oncoming and that’s reflected by his 96 Throw Under Pressure rating.

Brady lost one of his top targets in WR Brandin Cooks in the offseason, and while his veteran teammate and slot specialist WR Julian Edelman should be back healthy, he’s suspended for the first four games of the season.

So, Brady will have to make due with receivers like Chris Hogan and Jordan Matthews for a few weeks (he’ll be fine). Oh, and don’t forget about that Rob Gronkowski guy. The Patriots’ versatile backfield comprised of James White, Jeremy Hill, Rex Burkhead, and rookie Sony Michel should help make the team a force to be reckoned with in Madden NFL 19 yet again.

Now, to have some fun. Brady entered Super Bowl LII against the Philadelphia Eagles with a 45 Catch rating. Obviously, the Catch rating for QBs is not very important in Madden, but when an opportunity presents itself to troll Tom Brady, I’m going to take advantage of it. The Patriots ran a trick play. Receiver Danny Amendola tossed pass to Brady. He was wide open down the sideline. With his arms outstretched, the ball tipped off his fingers and fell to the turf. After the game, his Catch rating dropped from 45 to 38. He’ll start this season with a 39 Catch rating, and likely won’t have many opportunities to redeem himself.

Whether you’re a Tom Brady fan or not, what the man has done over the course of his legendary career deserves respect. And we should all be soaking up every snap, because he may not be playing for much longer. Father Time has to catch up, eventually.
