After the first weekend of play, we had eight of our final sixteen competitors vying for their share of the Madden Championship's $500,000 prize pool. Starting Saturday, May 6, we had sixteen more of Madden NFL 17's best competitors trying to claim the final 8 spots. Just like week 1, groups were broken up into four separate round-robins with the top two players from each group advancing to the finals, May 12 - 14. Here’s a look at the second weekend’s results.
Group E: Los*, Silent Soldier, Misery, Trueboy
Carlos “Los” Yancy returned to the big stage with some authority, quickly advancing to next weekend's Final 16. Not one to be shy on the mic, Los later told EA SPORTS that he feels slighted by the Madden Community and wants some respect put on his name. Joining him will be Rick “SilentSoldier” Cisneros, who kept the ball on the ground this weekend and displayed a very stingy defense. Those skills will come in handy next weekend when $500,000 is on the line.
Group F: Spotmeplzzz, FMB Monsta, Duke, StDx ImWild
The big question in Group F was whether or not Taylor “Spotmeplzzz” Robertson was a one-hit wonder after winning the 2017 Madden Classic last fall. Having gone 0-3 in his last Salary Cap Ranked Madden Championship Series live event, Spotmeplzzz had a lot of naysayers. But in the end, all doubt was erased as the man from West Virginia swept through his round-robin, going 3-0. Joining him is Juan “FMB Monsta” Velasquez, the high point passing specialist who won the San Francisco 49ers Club Series earlier this year.
Group G: Hollywood, Dubby, Millz, Figgy
Just a short few months ago, Chris “Dubby” McFarland stood on the 2017 Madden Bowl stage and proclaimed he'd never lose to a man wearing an Odell Beckham Jr. jersey after defeating LaVar “Hollywood” Gayle. But on day 2 of the Madden Championship’s second weekend, Hollywood took the spotlight, defeating Dubby in that very same New York Giants jersey. Hollywood went 3-0 to secure his spot for weekend 3, while Dubby eventually advanced via tiebreak at 1-2. With Dubby now 1-5 in his last six 2017 Madden Challenge Series live stage games, we’ll see if the Madden Bowl winner can crank it up next weekend.
Group H: Boogz, VoLTeRaX, Kerry Q, Franchise GG
The last group of weekend two didn’t disappoint. Entering the third leg of the round-robin, all four competitors sat at 1-1 and faced win-and-in games against their final opponents. When the buzzers rang, it was Reginald “Boogz” Brown and Michael “VoLTeRaX” Bryant that advanced with records of 2-1. Boogz qualifies and advances so often, he might as well move to Burbank. VoLTeRaX is also one to watch. The “King of the Swerve” is set to be a nightmare draw for his first opponent next weekend.
The Final 16 of the 2017 Madden Championship is locked! Who will win $100,000 for first place and claim the title of best Madden NFL 17 competitor in the world? Make sure to watch the live finals this weekend from May 12 – May 14. Tune in at Twitch.tv/Madden and the NFL Network!
