Angelo Trofa Interview - FIFA 17 Ultimate Team™ Kit Designer

Posted August 21st at 5:00pm.

Angelo is a multi disciplined designer whose passions range from graphic design to fashion and sportswear. Also a keen illustrator he likes to take an illustrated approach to design before rendering them in a more technical style. His passion for football kit design has inspired a series of self-published magazines, Football Strip Concepts.

Q&A:

Who are you? Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a designer and illustrator with a huge passion for sportswear. I worked in menswear after leaving university and recently went freelance after quitting my job to spend a few months on a “football pilgrimage” in South America, basically travelling and watching as much football as possible. I’ve also self published a series of magazines showing off my football strip concepts.

How long have you been playing FIFA?

For as long as I’ve been playing video games, I still own my first copy of FIFA ’96 on Sega Megadrive, I’ve been meaning to play it again for a while.

What is your fondest EA SPORTS FIFA memory?

There’s quite a few, I always love the little easter eggs you find within the game. Notably the early days where you could be sent off after slide tackling the goalkeeper, when you could make the two goalkeepers clash in the centre of the pitch when both players hold down the triangle button. But I also loved the indoor pitch on FIFA’97, the ball never went out!

What is your favourite club and/or player?

Inter Milan and the legendary Christian Vieri.

What is the inspiration behind your FIFA 17 Ultimate Team kit design(s)?

I’m a high lover of classic/ retro shirts, but also enjoy trying to interpret the future in a space age 1950s kind of way: conceptual and a little exaggerated.

What is your favourite aspect/element of your kit design(s)?

I always try to find icons or reference details for each design, this can be something or historic to the club or nation or even a past kit feature. It’s these things which I try to build the design around, which in turn become my favourite aspect.
Where can people see more of your work?

I’m quite active on social media, particularly Instagram and Twitter, both of which my handle is @angt34 and also my portfolio site: angelotrofa.co.uk
