The entertainment software industry is proud to team up with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition to help the nation’s youth lead healthier, more active lifestyles!
The Active Play PALA Challenge is a collaborative effort between the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and its member companies and the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN). It will strive to harness the excitement surrounding active video games to provide a long-term, sustainable approach in establishing healthy lifestyles by making video game screen time truly “active.” Active gaming is a great way to work towards earning your Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+), and PALA+ is a great tool to motivate and track activity levels to help you live a healthier lifestyle!
Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 13 offers a new twist on traditional gameplay through the integration of the Microsoft Kinect sensor. While playing the game with Kinect for Xbox 360, you will be required to use major muscle groups to control the game. The most commonly performed motion while playing the game is the traditional golf swing. In executing this motion, players will be tipping slightly at the hip, thus engaging lower core muscles. An upper body rotation provides the bulk of the physical activity while playing Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 13 with Kinect. Part of the golf swing includes a torso rotation using the shoulders and arms to drive the mechanic. The legs, obliques, abdominals, shoulders, lats and hip flexors are some of the muscle groups that will see the most work as a result of playing the game using Kinect. Players can take anywhere from 65 to 85 swings per 18-hole golf round. While in career mode, players are offered the opportunity to take part in four-round tournaments which could increase the number of swings to well over 300.
Participate in PALA+
PALA+ is the next phase of PALA (Presidential Active Lifestyle Award), a program of the President’s Challenge, designed to motivate Americans to make physical activity and healthy eating part of their everyday life.
The physical activity requirements for PALA+ are: 60 minutes/day for kids, 30 minutes/day for adults, five days a week for six out of eight weeks. Our definition of “activity” is simple: it’s any movement that uses large muscle groups as opposed to sitting or lying down. Physical activity doesn't have to be continuous to be healthy, either. Doing chores around the house counts. So does walking to school. Passively playing video games doesn't count, but ACTIVE GAMING definitely counts!
