Madden NFL All-25: Coach John Madden
By EA SPORTS Jul 25, 2013
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Madden NFL, we’ve compiled the best players in franchise history with help from our EA SPORTS GameChangers. We start with a head coach that needs no introduction: John Madden.
The release of Madden NFL 25 marks the 25th anniversary of the Madden NFL franchise. Just the name “Madden” alone has come to mean so much more than a moniker for a Hall of Fame coach and commentator, but it’s also the name for football video games. As the franchise turns 25, let’s take a look at the great coach that inspired it all.
Before John Madden became one of America’s most famous announcers, he coached the Oakland Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XI in 1977. Madden’s career record with the Raiders was 103-32-7, good enough for the second-highest winning percentage of any coach in NFL history.
In 1986, Madden provided the initial direction for the video game series that would share his name. He had one simple rule: “If it isn’t 11 on 11, it isn’t real football.” Coach Madden vowed not to put his name on anything that wasn’t “real.”
In designing and developing the first Madden NFL game, Coach Madden insisted he provide the best playbooks to ensure the most realistic simulation football game possible. John Madden Football would calculate matchups based on individual player stats.
The first Madden Football was released in 1988 on the Apple II, featuring 22 players on the screen, but only two teams: the All-Madden and All-Timers who had fictional players. The 16-bit version of John Madden Football debuted in 1990 with 28 teams and improved gameplay.
Just a few years later, the release of Madden NFL 94 introduced the real NFL to the series. Complete with 28 officially-licensed teams and logos, Madden paid homage to the franchise’s roots by including 38 “Championship Edition” teams from Madden NFL 93. Madden also made the call to replace himself in the broadcast booth with legend Ron Barr. This version stands to date as one of the best ever produced in the Madden series.
The last time John Madden graced the cover of Madden NFL would be in 2000. However, Coach’s legacy lives on today as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the best football video game ever.
